What is a Visual inspection safety check?

A Visual Inspection (also known as a landlords inspection) is an inspection on the condition of an existing electrical installation, this is carried out periodically and is purely visual, this check will not test the circuits in your home, it will purely be a visual inspection of the integrity of the installation. Please note this inspection is not just for landlords.

A Visual inspection safety check will
  • Help reveal if any of your electrical circuits are overloaded
  • Help find any potential electrical shock risks and fire hazards in your electrical installation
  • Help identify any defective circuits due to aged cable & fittings
  • identify any lack of earthing, bonding & protection.

Why is a Visual inspection safety check needed?

Every electrical installation deteriorates with use and age. It is important for the person responsible for the maintenance of the installation to be sure that the safety of users is not put at risk, and that the installation continues to be in a safe and serviceable condition. For landlords its important to have a safety check done annually or each time they change tenants.

Who should undertake a Visual inspection safety check?

Periodic inspections and safety checks should be carried out by a competent electrician.

What happens during a Visual inspection safety check?

An electrician will carry out visual checks on your installation to asses its safety, this will include the removal of some of your sockets, light fittings and light switches etc.

Please note: cables contained within the fabric of the building and beneath floorboards can not be checked.

NMR Electrical will issue a certificate after the inspection advising you of the safety of your installation. This will include any defects found.

A normal visual inspection will not cover 100% of the installation, we usually inspect 40% of your installation, should you wish more than this to be inspected you will need to arrange a periodic inspection. If any defects are found during the 40% inspection we would then advise a periodic inspection.

If any minor defects are found they will be rectified on the spot free of charge.

Please note, if any faults are found that if left could cause injury to the users of the installation and are considered dangerous we may advise that they are rectified on the spot, depending on the extent of work that needs to be carried out this work may be chargeable.
